Eleventh Dimension

Eleventh Dimension

Postby sgg61991 » Tue Apr 27, 2010 9:36 pm

After watching the video (many times (love it by the way)), I have come to wonder about a possible 11th dimension. Going on the basis of string theory as mentioned at the end of the video, would it not be required that an eleventh dimension exist? Because unless all of the strings exist in one singularity point (which, as dictated by quantum physics, is impossible), there must be "distance" between each string and would therefore require an 11th dimension to move through (if you existed in the eleventh dimension that is). Maybe I am simply thinking in 3D linear ways rather than 10D (non) linear ways. But then again I'm only a freshman in college studying computer science and not physics :P

As a side note, would an 11th dimension also leave room for a twelfth or more?

Comments? Ideas?

Hi sgg61991, here's how I'd answer your question. Physicists who talk about 11 dimensions are referring to 10 spatial dimensions plus one of time. I'm saying that time is not a dimension but a direction, or a way of describing change related to any spatial dimension, so it's redundant to count it separately. With my approach, I'm equating the tenth dimension in its unobserved state with the underlying perfectly balanced symmetry from which our universe or any other arises - as I say in my video, nothing vibrating means nothing created in the dimensions below. As soon as something "tries to" break the symmetry and start vibrating, we are dropped down into the other dimensions where a universe such as ours actually resides. My video and blog entry "Aren't There Really 11 Dimensions?" explores this in more detail.
